Modern and Classical Hero Comparison
The classical hero Achilles is comparable to the modern hero Superman in many ways. they are both invincible, they both have one weakness that would lead to their undoing, and their parents also tried to save them. Achilles and Superman are both very similar even though they are from different eras in storytelling.
Achilles and Superman both have a call to adventure that sets them on their adventures. For Superman, his “Father” dies, and for Achilles it is when he is called upon by Agamemnon to fight the Trojans to win back Helen. With both Achilles and Superman, their mother/mother figure doesn't want them to go on their adventure, which is kind of like the refusal of the call. Achilles’s mother, the nereid Thetis, did not want him to go to Troy because she saw a vision of him dieing there. Achilles fight with Agamemnon and him refusing to fight also could have been his refusal of the call. Superman's mother figure, Aunt May, didn't want him to go because she didn’t want him to leave.
Superman and Achilles both had supernatural aid to help them along their journey. To superman, this aid came from the knowledge of his father within the crystals that came on his ship. Achilles’s supernatural aid came from the goddess Athena, Who helped him defeat Hector of Troy. You could also consider The Blessing of the Styx as supernatural aid for Achilles, which is what made him invincible.
Superman and Achilles both went through their supreme ordeal during their journeys. Superman had to stop Lex Luthor from blowing up California. He had to stop the San Andreas fault from collapsing, and protect the people from the earth quakes from the explosion. Achilles’s supreme ordeal was when he had to fight Hector, and defeat him. Unlike Superman, Achilles had the help of his divine intervention during his supreme ordeal, the fight with Hector. Superman’s divine help had only been knowledge, so it did not directly help him like Athena did with Achilles.
Superman and Achilles are both similar in many ways, and they, for the most part, follow the heroes monomyth stages stated my Joseph Campbell. They both went through the call to adventure, refusal of the call, had divine help, and went through a supreme ordeal, although there really was no return journey for either of them since Achilles died and Superman never really stopped. Superman and Achilles are both very similar in what they did and how their stories progressed.
